...and he seems to have lined up a pretty solid base of supporters.

I’m not sure the parent companies of all the importers would agree with their local operations - adding another fly-in destination to the schedule won’t be cheap. But there’s a lot of rally history here, and it’d be great to see Rally NZ revived as an international event: it was always one of the best gravel events in the old WRC schedule.

Particularly nice now we have someone at the top level to cheer for :-).

It won’t be added as another event, adding NZ means dropping one, almost guaranteed to be OZ. Fortunately for Kiwiland Rally Australia is actually having trouble getting local support at the moment, so now is definitely the time to talk to the WRC about switching to the other land down under

Like Dusty, I think NZ will be back on the calendar replacing Australia, while Australia might get a round of World Rallycross.

The WRC has a tendency to do changes on the calendar to visit the home areas of their competitors. See Rally Norway at the height of Petter and Henning Solbergs career (and still going into Norway in Rally Sweden), Rally Alsace when Sebastien Loeb was dominating, Monte Carlo moving to Gap when Seb Ogier started winning rallies, Rally Poland getting back on the calendar when Kubica entered WRC, Rally Japan when Subaru was at their height of popularity and so on..

Yes, there’s no way it’ll be a new one. The extra fly-in comment was on the assumption it’d replace one of the more obscure European ones (Poland?).

But you’re right, Australia’s the most likely. Perhaps a reversion to the alternating-years thing they were doing for a while. From memory, that died in 2012 because Rally NZ couldn’t get a sponsor so stood aside to let Oz make a 3 year bid. 3 years is up next year....

But that all assumes RNZ can line up enough $. He says they have the funding, but notably absent from the video is someone saying “and we’ll pay for it”. The only one from the video who might step up is Colin Giltrap, who owns NZ’s biggest premium dealership group, and who’s poured a shitload of money into MotorSport over the years. But you don’t often see Giltrap Group taking the headline sponsor role.
